Canadian Bass Alexander Savtchenko, a native of Ukraine, immigrated to Canada in 1990. He was immediately recognized as a singer with a voice of uncommon beauty and emotional scope. He was also the only singer representing Canada and Ukraine named a winner at the 1992 LUCIANO PAVAROTTI INTERNATIONAL VOICE COMPETITION in Philadelphia, U.S.A.

As a resident artist with L'Opéra de Montréal in 1991-92, he sang the roles of Sacristan and the Jailer (TOSCA), Monterone (RIGOLETTO), Basilio (IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA) and the High Priest (NABUCCO). Other engagements that first season included BEETHOVEN'S SYMPHONY #9 with Orchestre Metropolitain Montreal.

In 1992-93, Savtchenko sang his first Alidoro in (LA CENERENTOLA) at Opera Lyra Ottawa, made his Canadian Opera Company (Toronto) debut as Angelotti (TOSCA) and Micha (PRODANA NEVESTA); he also sang the High Priest (NABUCCO) at Calgary's Opera, Don Fernando (FIDELIO) with Orchestra London, Canada, ROSSINI'S STABAT MATER with the Spokane Symphony, DVORAK'S TE DEUM and BEETHOVEN'S SYMPHONY #9 with the Philharmonic Society of Montreal.

Debuts in 1993-94 season included appearances at Portland Opera as Raimondo (LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR), Pacific Opera as Kuno (DER FREISCHÜTZ) and Houston Grand Opera as Timur (TURANDOT) and Dr. Grenvil (LA TRAVIATA).

In 1994-95 he appeared with Opera Lyra Ottawa as Sparafucile (RIGOLETTO), Baltimore Opera as Monterone (RIGOLETTO), Opera Hamilton as Colline (LA BOHÈME), MOZART REQUIEM and NELSON MASS with the Philharmonic Society of Montreal.

Debuts in 1995-96 included Portland Opera as Timur (TURANDOT), L'Opéra de Montréal as the Old Hebrew (SAMSON ET DALILA).

In 1996-97 included Opera Lyra Ottawa as Méphistophélès (FAUST), Opera Hamilton as Zuniga (CARMEN), and New York's Carnegie Hall in DVORAK'S TE DEUM.

In 1997-98 season included a concert at the KIEV OPERA, Opera Ontario Inc. as the Commendatore (DON GIOVANNI), Frank (DIE FLEDERMAUS), Basilio (IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA) Sparafucile and Monterone (RIGOLETTO).

The 1998-99 season included the MOZART REQUIEM with the Philharmonic Society of Montreal; The King of Egypt (AIDA) with Opera Ontario Inc.; and the BACH MAGNIFICAT with the Ottawa Centennial Choir.

From 1999-2002, as a resident artist with Kiel Opera, Germany (Bühnen der Landeshauptstadt Kiel), his roles included: Councillor Lindorf, Dr. Coppelius, Dr. Miracle and Dapertutto (LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN); Capelio (I CAPULETTI E I MONTECCHI); Basilio (IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA); Colline (LA BOHÈME); Zacharie (LE PROPHÈTE) ; Sparafucile (RIGOLETTO); Ramphis (AIDA) ; Farfallo (DIE SCHWEIGSAME FRAU); and a RUSSIAN ROMANCE PROGRAM.

Engagements in 2002-03 were with Opera Ontario Inc. as Nourabad ( LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES); and Colline (LA BOHÈME).

The 2003-04 season include Timur (TURANDOT) and Dr. (L'ELISIR D'AMORE) with Opera de Quebec; L'Opera de Montreal's Gala Concert; and RACHMANINOV'S, THE BELLS, with the Philharmonic Society of Montreal.

The 2004-2005 season includes Tom (UN BALLO IN MASCHERA) with Opera de Quebec; and Osmin (DIE ENTFUHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL) with Opera Ontario, and the VERDI REQUIEM with the Philharmonica Society of Montreal.

In 2006 - 2007 season includes the MOZART REQUIEM with the University of Ottawa Orchestra and Choir and his debut with Ooh La La Opera (Ottawa). Also, Micha (PRODANA NEVESTA), the Marquis de Calatrava (LA FORZA DEL DESTINO) with Baltimore Opera and Frére Laurent (ROMÉO ET JULIETTE) with Opera de Quebec.

In the 2008-2009 season he debued in the "The 3 Divos Concert," in Ottawa. He also performed the VERDI REQUIEM with "Le Choeur de Quebec" and EUGENE ONEGIN (Zaretsky) with Opera Lyra Ottawa.

In the 2009-2010 season , he will perform with Opera de Quebec in AIDA (Ramphis) and LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR (Raimondo).
